Following the 2021/2022 Fresher’s week which took place between the 10th and 14th October, 2022, we asked Freshers to document their experience. AKINPELU AMINAT, a student of Anatomy writes…
As a part of the fresher’s week, I partook in the debate competition. I used to think that debate is just about giving solid points and dressing well. Now, I know it is not just about points, but about your confidence with great energy, the way you were able to convince the whole audience, the judges, and your rebuttal, your delivery all matters. Understanding the topic as well is one good thing about debate because this is how you can convince the audience. Now, I know a debate could be as easy as writing. I just had to bring the vibes I put into writing into speaking. Even though I flopped because this is my first time speaking about something like that, I learned a few lessons.
I enjoyed the quiz too, it was hot. Education is not always about books, but we can learn from different aspects of life, the Bible, the Quran, Constitutions and History. Not everything is phy-chem-bio.
There is an aspect I love so much because I didn’t know about it before, the number crunch. Now, if anyone tells me to play number crunch, I know what they mean. The part of “Indolence we condole not” is the hottest part. It was lit and top-notch, 10 questions in 120sec. Well, my department lost at their level so I believe it is hot. It showed me the need to explore and not limit my thinking.

Although we were all the best, the best among the best won, and I believe that the best team won. I promise not to flop like that next time. Practice makes perfect, right?
For me, the last day was for the Academic summit, where winners got their gifts and awards. The Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mojeed Olaide Liasu; Special adviser to the governor, Hon. Victor Olajede and the Dean of student affairs, Azeem Ige presented their awards, and this was the point that gave me more morale because of the way this DJ was playing “stand up for the champion”. Mehn! I was impressed and happy for them, and this also makes me want to try harder because I really must shake these people and to do that, I must try harder and push through.
Dear diary, the Dean of Students affairs also mentioned that we’re going to do our test soon and we’re also starting the second semester this year. No more time to waste, right? Serious mode activated. Lastly, thanks for being my best buddy.
