The joint leadership of SSANU, NAAT, NASU called Joint Action Committee (JAC) declared an industrial strike on Wednesday, July 16, 2021. This led to the suspension of the Institution’s activities they manage. However, the School Management has called the strike by the three unions an illegal action.
The Joint Action Committee, JAC listed their demands which talked about unpaid salaries, promotion arrears, cooperative deductions, Earned Allowances, and implementation of New Minimum Wage.
In reaction to this, the Management dropped a mail to all staff members to notify them about their directives.
The School Management said the illegal activity is affecting the growth of the school as some examinations were unable to hold and also prevented the holding of some important University meetings.
A meeting held by the School Management Committee on Monday, July 19, 2021, has directed that all members of staff should report at their duty posts with immediate effect, and continue to perform their duties without any hindrance.
The Council also said any staff who fail to report for duty will be treated for being absent and appropriate punishment will be given to such staff according to the University rules and regulations.
A statement was signed by the Registrar, Dr Kayode Ogunleye, which was to update all staff members about the decision made by the school management concerning the JAC strike.
The statement reads: ” It has come to the attention of the University Management and Council that some members of staff have continued to absent themselves from office since the illegal declaration of strike on July 16, 2021, by the leadership of three unions, SSANU, NAAT, NASU under the umbrella of the Joint Action Committee (JAC). Management and Council have noted with concern that this action has not only affected the conduct of some examinations but has also prevented the holding of some important university meetings and generally slowed down the smooth operations of the University, and subsequently truncating the university academic calendar.”
“Consequently, the expanded Management Committee has directed that all members of staff should report at their duty posts with immediate effect, and continue to perform their duties without hindrance.”
“Any staff member who refuses to report for duty will be treated for abscondment from duty and appropriate sanction will be applied to such staff member in line with the university rules and regulations, while anybody who prevents staff from performing their lawful duty will be made to face the wrath of the law in accordance with the university extant regulations on such matters.”3
