This week’s subject is Praise, a creative director with an urban street wear fashion brand who believes in self love, doing what you love and what matters most to you.
WHO IS PRAISE?
Daniel Praise Toluwa is a recent graduate of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. He is the creative director for Bloom outfitters, an urban street wear clothing brand. He makes graphic designs, fashion illustrations, writes narratives and he’s a music lover.
HOW DID THE JOURNEY START?
When I was little, I grew interest in making life drawings till it’s perfect. In 2016, during my second year in uni, I fell in love with graphics design and I started making designs, logos, flyers. I didn’t stop drawing totally but I didn’t draw as much as I used to because now there was graphics and I use my system for that but before I would be able to design anything graphically, I would have to put pen to paper and draw it out.
In 2017, I started using IG and I saw lot of creatives in Nigeria and what they were in to. So, I started growing interest in fashion, street wear especially. With my knowledge of drawing and graphics, I was able to create fashion illustrations and design my own wears and that was how bloom was born.
HOW’S THE JOURNEY SO FAR?
I am really grateful to God because the journey has been great and it’s been crazy as well. In 2020, I didn’t do anything, we didn’t drop any capsule and collection and we’re back to business now, all thanks to God.
When Bloom outfitters started in 2018, we made only 2 shirts and we have moved from that to doing some crazy shipping thing. We know it’s going to get better.
WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES YOU FACE?
My first challenge then was having to match schooling with being creative and running the brand because of classes and attendance but now that I’m done, it’s not more of a challenge any longer.
Another challenge we faced was getting people to believe in the brand. It took a while but right now people are beginning to attach themselves to what this brand means.
There was also the problem of getting funds to run the brand. I had to rely on the money I make from graphics to run my brand and it was tasking but with the good people I have around me, it got easier. Another one is getting the right people to relate with what it entails and we are working on that.
HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO BALANCE SCHOOL AND WORK?
I had to find a leverage, a meeting ground where I would be able to settle it out because I really wanted this brand to work out.
WHEN DID YOU MAKE YOUR FIRST SALES AT BLOOM OUTFITTERS?
That was in 2018.
WHAT IS BLOOM OUTFITTERS ALL ABOUT?
Bloom outfitters is an urban street wear clothing brand for youths of the Gen Z. This brand is meant to inspire youths to follow their bliss. As a young creative in this country, it stifles creativity and we still see young creatives striving to be the best and following their bliss and doing what matters to them.
IF YOU WERE TO GIVE AN ADVICE TO LADOKITES, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Follow your bliss.
