Women are Proven Catalysts of Economic and Social Growth- Prof Stella O. Odebode

Speaking at the 2020 Celebration of International Women’s day, Prof Stella O. Odebode, Gender Mainstream Officer, University of Ibadan, emphasized on the importance of female to the society when economic and social growth is discussed.  While addressing the topic, Empowering Women in Academia for Leadership Roles, she called on all females to join hands together to share opportunities and ideas that will improve them. In her talk, she further campaigned that equal access to resources and opportunities should be enabled, rather than Equality.

The 2020 Celebration of International Women’s Day, which was held on the 10th of March,2020 took place at The Hall, LAUTECH. The celebration was organized by the Commonwealth Scholarship, LAUTECH, together with NAWACS LAUTECH Chapter and APWEN, Ogbomosho Chapter. The event saw quite a number of male and female students, lecturers, professors, and non-teaching staffs from across various departments. There, conversations took place on the Symposium topic ‘ Equality Not Male Privilege Nor Female Privilege.’

As females were advised to be determined and relentless in finding a balance with their personal and professional lives, several other speakers also had their moments to discuss the topic of the day. Among these are, Dr. Monica A. Orisadare, Director, Centre for Gender and Social Policy Studies, OAU, Prof. Kalilu, Department of Pure and Applied Fine Art, LAUTECH, Prof. Okunade,  Gender Mainstream Officer, LAUTECH and Prof. Ogunkunle, Department of Pure and Applied Biology, LAUTECH.

When asked for her opinion of the symposium, Aliyah, an attendee, mentioned that she was glad to be present as the event was quite insightful. ‘No one can tell me  I can’t do great things because I’m a female’, she said.

Sectors in various aspects of life were encouraged to provide facilities for females based on their characteristics while using understanding. The event ended with votes of thanks and issuance of a certificate to participants.
