My experience leaving Lagos for Ogbomosho to further my studies after I received my admission notification was not really a good one, based on the challenges I encountered.
Like any other newbie, I faced a lot of challenges and one of them was getting used to the environment. Understanding the environment and getting used to the weather was difficult for me. The environment looked odd to me, and the harmattan didn’t take it lightly with my skin. It’s all really different from Lagos. Eventually, I got a cardigan and a lip balm which helped me to subside the harmattan issues.
I noticed getting to lecture theatres at exactly 8 am (when lectures ought to start) was not a favourable option. This is because neither will I be able to secure a seat at the front seat nor see the makerboard clearly. I opted to leave the hostel by 6:30 am to reach the lecture theatre before 7 am. I soon got used to that routine.
Time management was also an issue, particularly understanding myself to know the time I assimilate best. Unlike home where I had every second of time during weekends and after school hours to read, here in LAUTECH, I have designated periods for practicals, lectures hours, tutorials, church activities and other things that chop off my time. I had to create a daily routine time table for myself in order to schedule things and make my student life less stressful.
My first-year was enjoyable and tough, but it thought me how to manage my time, reason things as a grown-up would and understand myself better in alot of ramifications.
